Thank You!

The 17th Annual Home Runs for the Homeless successfully raised well over $80,000 for Harford Family House thanks to our sponsors, teams and individual fundraisers! At this pace, we will eclipse the $1 million raised mark by year 20!  A big thank you goes out to everyone who made this event possible. Your efforts are creating a lasting, positive impact in the lives of those experiencing homelessness in our community.

Back Where It Started

When Randy Bednar was about twelve, two coaches made a lasting impact on him: BJ Alaimo and Scott Elliot. He grew up playing baseball around the same fields where the Homeruns for Homeless Derby now takes place. BJ, who’s been involved with the derby for a few years, always makes sure to invite Randy. And whenever he does, Randy tries to make time to come out.

Now older and with years of experience under his belt—including as captain of the University of Maryland Terps and a former Seattle Mariner—Randy returns not just to hit home runs, but to give back. The familiar field, the familiar faces, and the good cause all come together for a day of baseball and memories.

“Hit some home-runs, play some baseball; I’m having a good time,” he said. “Now that I’m older, I get to come back here, take a few swings, and just enjoy the day.”

From Overseas to Out on The Field

Gregory Meritzis, a member of Team Walker, brought a fresh perspective to the baseball fundraiser, having grown up overseas where baseball was not a common pastime. Despite limited experience and having only played baseball once before, Gregory embraced the challenge enthusiastically. “This is only the second time I’ve come out and hit baseballs, and to connect with one was a great feeling,” he reflected.

His decision to participate was motivated not only by the opportunity to support a good cause but also by the strong sense of teamwork fostered by longtime friend and team captain Brian Walker. Gregory highlighted how Brian’s leadership helped unite the team, making the experience rewarding beyond just the sport itself.
