Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Way
Meet Alex
Alex Way has always had a passion for connecting people through storytelling. She grew up in Baltimore as a lifelong Orioles fan, so baseball has always been a part of her life. After discovering Baseball 4 Causes (B4C) through her boyfriend Steven Kutcher, she was inspired to get involved and use her own talents to support the organization's mission. She volunteered to be the announcer of the fourth annual B4C event, the Harford Experience, and created a social media video. Whether announcing games, capturing behind-the-scenes moments, or highlighting the people who make each event possible, Alex believes every story matters. As she puts it, “I wanted to showcase everything this foundation does, everyone playing, setting up, cleaning up, and simply having fun together.”
For Alex, the experience was about celebrating the people who made this possible. She said, “Being able to announce the games and interact with the players, their families, and volunteers added a whole new level of excitement for me… watching the community come together made it really special. I was grateful to play a small role in helping make the event more memorable for everyone.”
A Passion Turned Profession
On Air
Alex’s passion for music started when she was 9 years old. She has been playing the electric and upright bass for about 16 years. She also grew up listening to 100.7 The Bay, a classic rock station here in Baltimore. Alex’s passion for music led her to study Jazz/Commercial Music Performance at Towson University for her undergraduate career. After graduating, she pursued an internship with 100.7 The Bay. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed that opportunity by a year, Alex stayed determined and connected and turned her internship into a full-time career. Today, she has served as an on-air radio host for the past 5 years. With a passion for creativity and storytelling, she has taken on various roles in social media and media production. While working as Traffic Director at 100.7 The Bay, where she scheduled commercial programming, Alex recognized the opportunity to build the station's social media presence. She's created and managed a social media page in a new role as Social Media Director, where she produces engaging digital content and supports the station as an assistant producer, combining her interests in storytelling, music, and creativity.
Passing It On
Wanting to expand her creative expertise, Alex earned her master’s degree in Emerging Media from Loyola University, where she studied digital media, social platforms, websites, and emerging technologies. Alex was also recognized with the Academic Medal of Excellence in emerging media for her outstanding achievements. When Loyola invited her to return as a professor, she eagerly accepted the opportunity to give students the same real-world perspective by teaching Social Media Analytics, teaching in the same program that helped shape her career. Inspired by her own undergraduate experience, where many of her professors were active professionals in the music industry, she saw the value of learning from people who were doing the work they taught. Before teaching at the university, Alex also taught private bass lessons to younger students, but after leading her first college classroom, she discovered her newfound passion for teaching. As Alex puts it, “I enjoy being able to pass down my knowledge to the next generation and even learn something from them too!”
Behind the Mic
Alex’s work extends far beyond the microphone; she sees radio and social media as tools to bring people together, share meaningful stories, and highlight organizations that truly make a difference. They are opportunities to strengthen communities and connect people with causes that matter. She explains that “working in radio and social media has been a blessing and has shown [her] just how powerful community connections can be.” Whether she’s on air or behind the scenes, Alex is passionate about using her voice and creativity to inspire others to get involved and create positive change. Through her work in radio and digital media, Alex witnesses the power of authentic storytelling to bring people together.
"Volunteering means being able to actively contribute and make a difference to my community. Whether you're lending your time, your talents, or simply your energy, those efforts can have a real impact."
Words of Wisdom
Keep it Real
Throughout her career in radio, social media, and education, Alex has learned that the most meaningful stories are the ones that feel authentic. She encourages her students to focus less on perfection and more on capturing genuine moments and real connections.
“Capture everything. Whether you’re posting or getting content, you want to sound real. In a world filled with AI, it’s challenging to tell what’s being artificially generated from what’s genuine. Focus on real stories, real people, and real connections. If you do that, whatever message or mission you’re trying to share will speak for itself.”
