  • What Made Maddy Run by Kate Fagan is a powerful story about a young athlete struggling with depression, it highlights the pressures athletes face and the importance of mental health care.  
  • How Bad Do You Want It? by Matt Fitzgerald explores the connection between the mind and performance, examining how elite athletes master their emotions and overcome adversity. 
  • The Happiness Trap by Dr. Russ Harris though not specific to athletes, offers practical advice on dealing with anxiety and stress, using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which many athletes find useful.

  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Whether you're facing mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, or just need someone to talk to, 988's caring counselors are here for you. You are not alone. 988 provides calling, texting, online chatting and ASL options. 
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States for 24/7, free, confidential communication. Crisis Text Line (CTL) is here for you. A live, trained volunteer Crisis Counselor receives the text and responds, all from a secure online platform. 
  • LGBTQ Trevor Lifeline: Here, trained counselors understand the challenges LGBTQ+ young people face and are available for support 24/7. They will listen without judgment through texting, online chatting, or calling. All of your conversations are confidential, and you can share as much or as little as you’d like (1-866-488-7386). 
  • SAMHSA’s National Helpline: SAMHSA’s National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. They can assist users in finding local resources, treatment options, and opportunities (1-800-487-4889).

I Would Like to Learn About or Join a Local Support Group

 

Share Well: A completely online option, Share Well hosts support groups for both general mental health struggles as well as more specific groups centered around topics like anxiety, depression, and burnout amongst others. 

NAMI Maryland: For those 18+ Nami offers great online and in-person options to meet with other's struggling with their mental health. Meetings are confidential and free-of-cost. 

Psychology Today: A great search-engine style resource with a multitude of different types of support groups meeting in-person all throughout Maryland. Group topics include everything from self-esteem issues, to anxiety, to anger-management- spanning all different ages.
