Remembering Dan Funk

An Outstanding Softball Coach for Churchville Lightning

Coach Dan Funk dedicated over 20 years of his life to coaching, mentoring, and inspiring young athletes. An outstanding coach for the Churchville Lightning, Dan Funk left an unforgettable mark on the team and community, going above and beyond for every player he worked with. In addition to his on-field coaching duties from 2002 to 2006, Dan contributed immensely to the program in various capacities, including fundraising, securing sponsorships, assessing players, and overseeing their development. He also played a key role in supporting and mentoring the coaching staff across different teams over the years. Always an advocate for both players and parents, Dan made himself available as an impartial “sounding board,” helping to address and resolve issues within the program with fairness and understanding.

A Passionate Advocate and Strong Mentor

Coach Dan spent much of his free time teaching private lessons and establishing the pitching foundations for many scholarship-caliber pitchers over the years. His passion for softball was undeniable, but what truly set him apart was the way he invested in his players' lives, pushing them not only to become better athletes but also to be better people. He assisted in promoting Lightning players to colleges, whether by dedicating personal time to enhance a player’s college video, providing quality references for jobs or college applications, or working individually with players to refine their skills.

A Community Hero and Friend to All

Whether it was helping a young player break out of her shell or guiding another through tough times with his words of wisdom, Dan’s impact extended far beyond the field. His infectious positivity and encouragement made everyone around him feel capable of greatness, and his constant message of “only love” resonated deeply with those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy is embodied in the countless stories of lives he touched, the friendships he fostered, and the love he shared with his Churchville Lightning family. Over the years, Dan has been a dedicated supporter of Lightning athletes, and the pre-game cheer of “Intensity” was created to reflect the passion, drive, and commitment he demonstrates in his work with the program’s players. His induction recognizes him as a vital contributor to the program, ensuring that his efforts are celebrated and acknowledged. Players like Taylor Nantz write that "the impact [Coach Dan] has made on [herself] as well as countless young athletes and the softball community across the entire state is unmatched".

Saluting Coach Dan

- A Note from Churchville Lightning -

The friends, fans, and families of the Churchville Lightning are dealing with heavy hearts as, collectively, we mourn the loss and passing of Coach Dan Funk. For the past 20 years, Coach Dan has been an outstanding coach, friend and mentor to the players of the Lightning as well as the countless others that he worked with as either a high school or private lesson coach. Coach Dan was blessed with the uncanny ability to inject life, energy and confidence into every player and person that had the good fortune to be in his presence. He was unique in his ability to listen and be empathetic, while at the same time, always knowing exactly the right thing to say. Certainly, this unique ability was his "super power". Over the past several years, Coach Dan battled with heart related health issues. But, with the same grit and determination he expected from his players, Coach Dan battled those issues and was an inspiration to us all with his on-going display of courage, commitment and perseverance as well as his periodic notes and posts of encouragement. His passing will leave a gaping hole in the hearts of many and his passion, energy and intensity for life will be sorely missed. Thankfully, all Lightning players, both past and present, will forever have a piece of "Mr. Dan" in their minds and hearts. Rest In Peace.

A Legacy of Love

- Supporting Selena Funk -

One of the largest initial focuses of the Dan Funk Legacy Project was to provide unwavering support for Coach Dan's daughter, Selena Funk, as she pursues her dream of obtaining a teaching degree. Currently enrolled at Towson University, Selena is dedicated to her studies and has aspirations to further her education in graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, a city that holds significant meaning for her father, who grew up there. Although Dan is no longer with us, his enduring legacy continues to inspire those around him. The Dan Funk Legacy Project is proud to champion Selena's educational journey, reflecting the same commitment to mentorship and support that Dan exemplified in his coaching career for his players.
