Fresh Start Furnishings is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Aberdeen, Maryland, dedicated to providing essential furnishings and home goods for free to individuals and families facing financial hardship in Harford and West Cecil counties. Since its founding in 2016, Fresh Start has furnished over 1,850 homes, helping more than 5,300 people begin anew with hope and dignity. The organization’s mission is to transform empty houses into homes by providing essential furnishings, home goods, and connections to resources that increase self-sufficiency. Their vision is that every family has a furnished home and a stable foundation to build from.
Fresh Start offers gently used, quality furniture and home goods to families and individuals in need, with services offered by appointment only and eligibility criteria to ensure fair access. Their self-guided Path to Success program connects clients with resources and support to achieve self-sufficiency and long-term stability.

There are many ways to get involved. In the showroom, volunteers assist clients in selecting and packing items, offering encouragement and kindness along the way. Behind the scenes, helpers sort and organize donations, prepare housewares, and contribute to special projects that keep the organization running smoothly. Volunteers can also join the transport team, delivering furniture and donations to ensure families receive the support they need. Shifts are flexible, with weekday and select Saturday opportunities, making it easy to fit volunteering into your schedule.

Our primary focus is to engage and inspire young writers to craft compelling stories that encourage involvement in non-profit organizations and charitable initiatives. By providing guidance and instruction through mentorship, we ensure that these young writers receive the necessary support to thrive. Through their participation in this program, they gain invaluable experience while contributing to a greater cause.
