John Simpers: A Legacy of Service

Celebrating a Life Dedicated to the Diamond

John Simpers, Sr., a dedicated veteran and beloved figure in his community, served in the Army National Guard from 1963 to 1972 and worked as an Artillery Tester at Aberdeen Proving Ground. A passionate umpire for 46 years, his commitment to service was evident both on and off the field.

He was a pivotal force in developing and leading Harford County's amateur baseball programs. John was instrumental in establishing a top-tier high school umpiring program for the county's youth and the famed Susquehanna League, which included the recruiting, training, scheduling, and management of officials. His service extended to organizations like the Havre de Grace Little League, where he ensured a positive experience for all participants.

Acknowledging Excellence

Established in 2018, the award recognizes individuals who exemplify John Simpers’ dedication to amateur baseball in Harford County. Each year at the Harford Men’s Baseball League (HMBL) spring event, a recipient is honored for their outstanding service to the community. In addition to the recognition, a stipend is provided to support youth umpires, helping them purchase essential equipment and continue their journey in officiating. Since its inception in 2018, six honorees have been awarded, and more than $1,000 has been given to help young umpires invest in proper gear.

The scholarship honors John Simpers, a dedicated umpire for 46 years who tirelessly served the amateur baseball community of Harford County, Maryland. Recipients of this award will exemplify his legacy of fair play, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the sport.

Our primary focus is to engage and inspire young writers to craft compelling stories that encourage involvement in non-profit organizations and charitable initiatives. By providing guidance and instruction through mentorship, we ensure that these young writers receive the necessary support to thrive. Through their participation in this program, they gain invaluable experience while contributing to a greater cause.
