Send Get Well Wishes to Paul Smeton
Since 2015, I have been living with Follicular Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. After undergoing four rounds of treatment—including both radiation and chemotherapy—I’ve decided to pursue a different approach this time.In 2017, the FDA approved a promising new treatment called CAR-T cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy). In simple terms, this therapy involves extracting blood from my body, isolating the T-cells, and then sending them to a lab where they are modified to better recognize and kill the cancer cells in a more effective and efficient way. So, with Car-T therapy, my immune system has acquired a bullpen of highly effective hard ball pitchers capable of delivering fast balls with incredible control to knockout the cancer.Currently, I am at a stage in the treatment process where my immune system is very vulnerable, making me highly susceptible to infections and other illnesses. Because of that, I won’t be able to join you on the ball field for now. But I’m hopeful and looking forward to getting back out there later this year or early next.
Health Updates

Last week Paul had a PET Scan to determine the progress of his CAR-T Cell treatment. The results indicated that he has had a complete response to the treatment and that he is in remission from his cancer. The recovery of Paul’s immune system may take a little more time but the metrics they use to evaluate this are all heading in the right direction. Many thanks to all for your continued support, thoughts and prayers.

"At Day 18 post Car T Cell infusion, Paul is doing great! He continues to be monitored closely for side effects with frequent appointments at the hospital. All the test results thus far are trending slowly in the right direction. Recovery of course takes longer than one wants but Paul perseveres with walks and other physical activity to keep moving forward. Key however to his recovery and what Paul is so very thankful for, are the prayers and support of family, friends and his baseball people lifting his spirits every day." - Debbie Smeton

Hello Paul, Sure sorry you had to go through this but looks like things are going the right way. Hang tough and keep that great attitude you have competing in baseball. Miss catching for you, ( not so much batting against you, but would like to see you back in there playing.) Hope to get that battery back together. Prayers to you and your family to beat this.

Hello Paul! I heard you’re battling once more. You are a true warrior. But in true David vs Goliath fashion I know you’ll be victorious once again. You’ve made a true impact on me as a player and as a person. I’m not saying that just because of your current situation. You’ve taken the time to mentor me on the field and in the dug out and it’s meant the world to me. I’ve heard similar statements from many others that we play with. I’ve no doubt I’ll be seeing you on the field again in the very near future. Until then, should you need anything, even if you’d like to chat, do not hesitate to reach out. Get well my friend.

Paul, I am just learning about this outlet to make contact and the latest on your battle with this dreaded disease. You were always a great friend of mine on the ball field and a true meaning of courage. I don’t know how you continued to play and played well. Such a fierce competitor and a fine man. Being involved in the medical field now for almost 40 yrs, I was in constant amazement how you continued to play while being sick and dealing with treatments. It is a rarity. I never heard you complain! I am proud to know you and proud you are my friend! You keep fighting and keep that head up! I know you will! Get back on that field!!! If there’s anything I can ever do for you don’t hesitate to ask. You’ve got friends down here on the shore. We’re rooting for you and know you will come out on top!!
