Abner Doubleday Picnic Area
A Thoughtful Initiative
Five years ago, Steve Murfin started working on a project with the Village of Cooperstown and The Friends of Doubleday to build a picnic area in the open space down the left field line at Doubleday Field. The area was built in order to honor the Doubleday baseball brethern. It required a lot of sweat and resources along with working the politics of the Village to make it happen.
About the Picnic Tables
The tables are made out of the original bleachers at Doubleday Field - the same ones that people sat in when they watched the HOF games starting in 1939 and going back to when Doubleday was built in 1920. Thanks to the ideas and efforts of Steve Murfin, a long time supporter of Doubleday Field, picnic tables made from the former third base bleachers were made available for use.
What could be better than sitting at one of these cool tables and taking in a game at historic Doubleday Field?
The Picnic Area
Appreciation
Many thanks go to the Village Staff, who helped Steve Murfin gain approvals from the Commissioners and the Friends of Doubleday Staff, who guided him throughout the process of purchasing the wood and metal frames and to get them built by the Doubleday Grounds Crew. All donators have their name listed on the Friends of Doubleday home page, as their interest in this project and contribution will enable baseball families that visit Cooperstown to enjoy the Doubleday Picnic area for many years.
Friends Of Doubleday
Friends of Doubleday is the 501c3 non-profit fundraising organization that supports the Village of Cooperstown's historic Doubleday Field. The purpose of FOD is to help the Village meet the costs of both large renovation projects at the Doubleday Field campus and smaller operational expenses, by raising funds via the sale of merchandise, tours, events, etc. Friends of Doubleday offers many opportunities to donate and order to support the baseball community.
