Taking a Look Back
Blue Skies and Baseball
Despite blisteringly hot temperatures of over 90° and a UV index of ten, the excitement was palpable as players took the field for the 2025 Over 60 Baseball Classic on June 26th, 2025. As each team warmed up on the field, old rivalries came to life, present in players’ light-hearted teasing and easygoing game-talk. At 9:00am, the first game of the day started, a seven-inning game at Harford Community College. This was followed by a nine-inning game, held at the John Carroll baseball field, allowing players to reunite with old friends while also supporting Gear 4 Kids, an initiative to provide sports equipment to organizations in need. Aided by frequent trips to the water cooler and fueled by pure determination to play, the Over 60 league braved the heat for a game that lasted over two hours, showing that for many, age is not an obstacle.
Game Results
- Game 1 saw A and B Squad edge out their opponents with a close 5–4 victory.
- Game 2 delivered even more offense, as B and D Squad pulled off a 9–7 win.
- With two wins on the day, Squad B emerged as the overall winner!!!
Paul Smeton Award
During lunch, a ceremony was held to recognize Paul Smeton as our first Living Legacy Award recipient for the Baseball Legacy Society. The living legacy award program honors individuals who have demonstrated a lifelong love for the game of baseball and recognizes both their career and service, accomplishments and passions. Going along with this award, each future event at John Carroll in the B4C Baseball Over 60 Series will be called the Paul Smeton Classic.

Paul's involvement with causes that support young people is key to his identity. He "likes seeing young people be given an opportunity and a pathway to having a better life in the future." Paul was one of the founding sponsors of the Technology 4 Causes Transformation Guild because it aligns with his passion for quality education and pushing young people to go beyond their comfort zones. He also supports education through The Legacy Project at Saint Casimir Catholic School in Baltimore City. Additionally, Paul serves Baseball 4 Causes as a program chairperson for the Over 60 Series, shaping future events with his vision and energy.
Paul’s goal is to conquer cancer for the fifth time and continue his ongoing commitment to living life to the fullest. His hope for all of us is that we learn from his commitment to faith, family, and baseball, and are inspired to keep giving back.
Post-Event Cookout
Participants in the Harford Experience and Over 60 events came together for a special evening of connection and celebration at John and Sue Kutcher's home. The gathering offered a warm, welcoming atmosphere where friends old and new enjoyed a delicious dinner featuring tender pulled pork, savory chicken, and an array of sides and refreshments. The evening’s highlight was an energetic set of live classic rock music performed by Joe Teague, Steven Kutcher, and Shane Grimm—each a talented musician and proud member of the Harford Experience and Over 60 community. Their music filled the backyard with nostalgic tunes and good vibes, setting the perfect tone for a summer evening. Guests mingled poolside, shared laughter and stories, and embraced the relaxed setting. Even when a storm rolled in around 7 p.m., spirits remained high as folks took shelter under the deck's cover and tents, undeterred by the weather. The storm became part of the experience—a reminder that with the right company, nothing can rain on a good time.
Memories in Motion
Supporting Meaningful Causes
Joshua Hamer Legacy Foundation
Joshua Hamer, born April 2nd, 2001, in Denton, Texas, was a talented, joyful young man and player #25 on The John Carroll School's Patriots Baseball Team. With a passion for all sports, but especially baseball, Joshua excelled academically and was loved by all. Tragically, in 2017, at the age of 15, he lost his life in a car accident on his way to school. In 2017, the Joshua Hamer Memorial was established to help provide financial support for students to give them the opportunity to attend John Carroll. Over $120,000 in aid has been provided, creating a life altering trajectory for many recipients. In 2023 the Josh Hamer Legacy Foundation was established to expand support for college scholarships. In its first year, the scholarship has already helped three students, and the goal is to continue changing lives one person at a time.
Youth Mentoring Program- Transformation Guild
The Transformation Guild is a mentoring program of Technology 4 Causes, which was launched by the Kutcher Foundation in collaboration with DICORP, Inc. to create a powerful philanthropic impact through the multiplying forces of technology. The Guild is dedicated to harnessing the power of writing and technology to create a positive impact in society. Our primary focus is to engage and inspire young writers to craft compelling stories that encourage involvement in non-profit organizations and charitable initiatives. By providing guidance and instruction through mentorship, we ensure that these young writers receive the necessary support to thrive. Through participation in this program, they gain invaluable experience while contributing to a greater cause.
Gear 4 Kids
Gear 4 Kids is a community-driven initiative dedicated to supporting youth sports by highlighting local hero coaches and ensuring that teams have the equipment they need to succeed. We focus on bridging the gap for athletes in underfunded areas by connecting coaches who have specific needs with generous donors willing to provide monetary donations for various youth sports gear. Through our platform, we shine a spotlight on coaches making a difference in their communities while facilitating donations for essential equipment, ensuring that every young athlete has the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive. Here at G4K, we believe a lack of gear should never stop someone from enjoying the sport they love!
The Baseball Legacy Society
The Baseball Legacy Society (BLS) honors the lasting contributions of those who have shaped the baseball community—both those we remember and those still making an impact. Through shared stories, personal tributes, and legacy-driven initiatives, we celebrate their impact both on and off the field. Our mission is to preserve these legacies, support one another through all seasons of life, and ensure that the spirit of our baseball family continues to inspire for generations to come.
Off the Field & In the Moment
Our Over 60 Classics are special events for players 60 and up, offering a unique opportunity for older players to enjoy competitive baseball on a top-quality turf field; one of our primary locations being The John Carroll School. Typically, players participate in at least two seven-inning games with modified "fantasy camp" rules (no stealing), fostering camaraderie and fair competition. Players are assigned to teams with a goal of achieving a competitive balance. We will seek to accommodate playing requests amongst friends but will generally limit those to groups of two or three. Are you interested but worried about qualifying? Generally, we will allow a limited number of players aged 58-59 to play, however, all pitchers must be 60 or older.
Our Baseball Classics are a great chance to enjoy a fun day on the field, have a free lunch with friends, and contribute to meaningful causes. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Baseball Legacy Society and our very own youth mentoring program. The Baseball Legacy Society works to provide resources and engage with families in our local baseball community, as well as to honor the legacies of those players who are no longer with us. Our mentoring program allows young students to learn valuable life skills through volunteering, internship, and workshop opportunities. Programs focus on communication, creative writing and technological literacy, while assisting various service missions to help others. If you are interested in playing in our next Baseball Classic or learning more about us, please fill out our player interest form!
